DAYLIGHT ANALYSIS

The daylight analysis is important to determine the best facade methods that should be used for the building. Winter, Spring/Summer, and Fall are the times of the year represented (January, May, September). On each of the days, these are times that are used: 8am, noon, and 5pm. Below are the findings that I came up with.

FACADE / FIRST FLOOR DESIGN

The treatment for the facade of the building is going to be very minimal. On the sides of the building, big window displays will be constructed from the original window settings of the buildings. Also, two display windows will be located in the front of the building. Aluminum awnings finished with a turquoise powder coat finish will be placed above each display window. Also a few trees set in cement planters will minimally landscape the sidewalk on the sides and front of the building. Minimal construction is going to take place because the focus of this product is on sustainable design.


The design of the first floor is focused on this curvilinear counter idea that transforms into merchandise shelving, seating, reception counters, manicure tables, etc. On the left side of the building facing towards the back will be huge display graphics. The main colors of the space are going to be turquoise, green, yellow, and white. These colors providing a soothing but energetic atmosphere.

Preliminary Space Plan / Conceptual Design

FIRST FLOOR
The first floor was originally going to be only retail. Through the space planning process, there was excess square footage for the retail products. Therefore, I decided to add manicure and pedicure sections on this level. The concept for this space is going to be surrounded by tables designed to stack on top of each other, partially beneath each other, or stand alone. Also another major concept of the space is going to be these ribbon like counters that are going to flow through the entire space. More will be described when I present each sketch. The blue indicates ceiling mounted double-sided flat screen televisions.

First Floor
Entrance Display
The entrance display is going to be the first thing a user experiences as they enter the space. It will also hide the elevators from being the first thing seen. The fusion logo and name will be ceiling mounted and will also light up from in. The display tables will be centered in front of the sign and display new products.

Merchandise Shelving
This is an example of how the merchandise tables can be arranged. They can be arranged in any formation. The tables will come in a blue, green, yellow, and white. The sizes will be small, medium, and large.

Ribbon Concept
These sketches represent the ribbon like concept of the design. These components will be booth seating, manicure stations, nail drying stations, merchandise shelving, etc.

Second Floor
The space plan is a very open design. The first installation the user will experience is mannequins dressed in different outfits that are installed in shadow like boxes. Again, the stackable tables will be used in this space. This space will also have the ceiling mounted televisions as well as wall mounted televisions, which are represented by the blue.

Preliminary Space Planning / Component Design

Component Design - Main Light Fixture
In the entrance of each floor is going to have a main light fixture. The inspiration for the light fixture came from an hooded hair dryer helmet (as shown below). On the first and last floor, the light fixture is going to be one big fixture. The floors in between (2-6), the light fixture is going to be scaled to different sizes and also be varied in quantity. The light fixture can be created in two different ways: a clear acrylic with a chrome rim and the crystals that resemble the air holes found on the hooded hair dryer, or be made of a perforated metal material. Also the light fixtures can be a different color for each floor which will help distinguish the design of the floor and the individuality of the floor.




First Floor Preliminary Floorplan / Organic Product Retailer
The circulation for the space planning for this floor is very open. The feeling is going to be somewhat industrial with the products showcasing color. Each section is going to be distinguished by a ceiling element that has recessed lighting but in the middle of each ceiling fixture is going to be alcove lighting that will showcase a different color. This will help distinguish the retail areas. The floor pattern is going to compliment the ceiling elements.










Some of the retail shelving for the first floor is going to be constructed of cable wire and LED light tubes. The construction of these components is going to allow visibility into each retail section while providing a soft glowing light. It is also going to display the products in an effective manner.
Second Floor Preliminary Floorplan / Professional Hair Salon
The space planning for this floor is also going to be open. This floor and the student salon are very similar in layout. The only difference is the student salon floor does not have a manager's office or a staff lounge. The hair shampoo area is going to be in a circular pattern. Also the rcp for this floor is going to be similar to the first floor excpet there will be track lighting over the styling area. This will create interesting lighting effects and with a honey glow, will make complexions of the clients look flawless. The design of the styling station is the same idea as the retail shelving with the cable wires and LED lighting.

Block Diagrams / Floors 1-7

These are the block diagrams for each floor of my building that I am using. All of the restrooms are stacked on top of each other and the reception areas are all located in the same location. This is for the consumer to have a familiarity with each floor. It also provides a more cohesive design. As for the bathrooms being stacked, it is more efficient for the plumbing throughout the building. There is also an entrance on each floor which is also located in the same location. I am building out the 2nd to 7th floors out to match the first floor square footage, but in doing so I am going to maintain most of the original wall and make it part of the design of the spaces.

FIRST FLOOR
Main Retail Area / This floor is going to be very open except for the provate areas such as the bathroom and the storage area. Notice how the sink area is close to the bathroom, the reason for this is plumbing.


SECOND FLOOR
Professional Hair Salon / This is also a very open floor plan except for the bathroom, dispensary, staff lounge and manager's office. The waiting area is going to have a small retail section that will be visible to the receptionist.


THIRD FLOOR
Student Hair Salon / This is basically the same plan as the professional hair salon. The only spaces that aren't included on this floor is the manager's office and the staff area. Also part of the styling area is going to open above to the cosmetology which is going to be illustrated furthur on. This is to provide a unity between these two floors.


FOURTH FLOOR
Cosmetology School / The important aspects of this floor is classroom 1 and classroom 2, which have a division between them. This partition can open up to create one large lecture room. Also part of the computer / study area is going to open up below into the student salon area. This will be illustrated furthur on. The reason for this is to connect these two floors together to have the appeal of one huge area.


FIFTH FLOOR
Cosmetology Institute - Office / This area is going to be the administrative part of the school and the salons. This is the area where prospects will come to begin tours and for students to come for financial questions or any other concerns.


SIXTH FLOOR
Fashion - Art - Hair Gallery / This is the area where fashion designers, hair stylists, and artists can display their talented works of art. After the fashion shows or any other event, this is the space for the meet and greet with the audience. There is a mini-bar that will sell wine and regular mixed drinks. Also there will be some h'douvres.

SEVENTH FLOOR
Multi-Purpose Event Space / This is the space that will hold the fashion shows or any other event. There is the same mini-bar as seen in the gallery space. The hair and make-up for the shows will be done in the professional and the student salon floors. The runway will also be modular and can be arranged in many configurations. This will add versatility to the space.
